When Mary came back, Elon told her that the company didn’t need her services anymore. Mary who thought for years she was indispensable, was fired without notice.
Actually, Mary was not the only one who was thinking that they are so important at work and employers can’t replace them including me, except I never been fired!
I thought for many years, I was indispensable at work and I could believe that I was the super hero of the company. That was not right. The true was and always will be that employers and organizations can and have to deliver “the work” with or without you and me. Always they will be able to hire someone who can do the work.
Do you still think you are indispensable? You might be if you answer the following questions with yes.
DO YOU HAVE EXPERTISE IN A FUNCTION THAT IS SO CRITICAL TO THE COMPANY?
You might, but that is not what make you indispensable. What makes you so important is if you become so good at it, so that no one else can be assigned to perform that function.
DO YOU MENTOR AND TRAIN JUNIOR COLLEAGUES?
Employees who mentor others are always valuable to any company. But make sure you are one of those people who enjoy watching others succeed and never think that person you are helping might replace you. Please be confident.
IS LEARNING PART OF YPUR EVERYDAY TASKS?
